As a Decorating and DIY fanatic I've come to expect the constant jibes, sardonic looks, and amused giggles as part and parcel of my chosen career path as Editor-cum-Project Manager I launched www.Home-Dzine.co.za. After all, what woman in her right mind would try to enter this 100 percent male dominated field. With comments such as; "How does it feel to hold a powerful tool in your hand!", to "What happens when you break a nail!", my male counterparts have quickly classed me as a dumb blonde who couldn't possibly do what they do.
Well, no more. Research now reveals that women are the driving force behind DIY and Home Improvement products, and women are now considered a considerable buying power for DIY power tools, home hardware and decorating products - You go girls!
How does that make me feel? I say, it's about time. I've often stated that it's the women that make the choices - not the men. We have more savvy when it comes to decorating, we're logical thinkers (in most cases), and when we say we want to put up a shelf, we don't just go out and buy a piece of wood, a couple of brackets and knock it up. We think about what material we would like to use; the best place to put it, which brackets would look best, how best to finish it off, and what it will be used for.
