Learn more about Power Tools

Janice Anderssen

Today I held the very first DIY Diva training courses at my home.  The course was set to start at 10h00 and finish at 14h00.  And of course today is the day that Eskom decided to shed some of the load!   However, lucky for me - and the attendees - that cordless power tools were invented.  Not only did I manage to cover most of the basics of power tools, we had a lot of fun!

It was during this first training class that I discovered something new.  I'm not only going to be building confidence and providing knowledge for using power tools, but I'm also passing on my little tricks of the trade.  Everyone has the ability to be able to use power tools, it's simply a matter of knowing how to handle them safely and with the respect that power tools deserve. However, learning the little trade secrets that make life easier takes much longer and is a process that is only achieved over time. I would have been overjoyed at being able to attend my course. There are so many power tools that one can get lost for choice, but knowing which are the best to use and why is a different story.

There are many different models and makes of screwdrivers, drills, sanders and the like, that it becomes difficult to walk into a store and know for sure what you want. Take sanders for example.  There are Orbital Sanders, Multi Sanders, Random Orbit Sanders and Belt Sanders. Each one of these is used for different sanding applications - but which one is right for you?

I think that it is important for every beginner DIY enthusiast to learn as much as they can about power tools, to be more informed and be able to make the right choice when it comes to buying power tools for themselves. After all, power tools are not cheap, and buying the correct power tool from the start means that you perform better and your projects are done in a professional manner.
