Winter is just around the corner, and indications are that as usually we are in for a chilly one. With Eskom regularly shedding it's load throughout South Africa, don't get left out in the cold this year.
If you have recently visited a home or hardware store you will have noticed the large stock piles of generators. You can buy small models from as little as R1,000, and larger models for as much as R10,000. But before you rush off to buy one be aware that these generators are extremely noisy and guzzle gas like there is no tomorrow. A generator is not an option if you live in a complex or development, where your neighbour is less that 100m away. I can imagine the sound level if everyone had to quickly start up their generators when the lights went out - deafening madness!
A better option to consider is gas. Not only is it cleaner, it's much quieter - in fact it's so quiet the neighbours won't even know you are using it! Now that sounds sensible to me. Whilst the initial outlay for a gas heater is more than that of an electric heater, at least you will have the security of knowing that it's there when you need it. You can use gas for cooking, heating - and like any happy camper will tell you - lighting and refrigeration. In fact gas has so many applications I'm surprised we're not better informed as to the many benefits. I'm definitely switching over to gas this year.
The only drawbacks to running on gas is that you have to ensure that you have a regular supply (especially as stocks sometimes run out when demand is high), and you have to be able to house the containers in a safe place when not in use.

post a commentGenerators are fine but still needs diesel, a solar system for your geyser is still the most cost effective way to avoid sitting with cold water this winter.
