Tall tale for a little girl

Janice Anderssen

I recently went shopping with a friend who wanted to decorate her three-year old daughters bedroom. Mom had a good idea in her mind of what she wanted, and she was even kitted out with a small list of items that her daughter ‘must have’ in her new bedroom. We were all so excited to be going out looking for a cute bed, a darling little bedside table, an adorable lamp, a dainty chest of drawers, and bed linen to match.

We weren’t asking for much, just a few quality pieces that were well manufactured and would stand the test of time, and look wonderful in Jessies new bedroom. We walked, and we walked, and we walked, and after three shopping centers we could walk no more.Yes there are some nice piece of furniture out there, but nothing really says cute, and those there had a little bit of cute in the design simply weren’t practical – or even slightly affordable.Add to our frustration that we couldn’t find any nice artwork for the new room, or accessories to match, and the day almost ended up a total failure for the grownups, and total disappointment for one little girl.

As we took our final coffee break for the day to rest of weary feet before trudging miles to find the car, I happened to mention that I had recently set up Decorating Divas as part of the www.Home-Dzine.co.za website. This division of Home-Dzine is responsible for designing and manufacturing unique furniture. It was only then that the penny dropped!  “Why don’t you make everything for Jessies room?” says mom. Needless to say, our coffee break lasted almost as long as our shopping spree; we designed a bed and headboard, matching bedside unit, a drawer unit, and even a chair bed with built in storage. I even went as far as adding some unique artworks specially designed for Jessie, a mirror and coat hooks for behind her door. And the cost? Everything worked out a half the price of everything we had seen. I will be submitting pictures of the room once completed, and once my camera comes back from its second season in the repair shop!

The moral of my blog. If you have the know how and opportunity to do-it-yourself - give it a try!  If you don't get in touch with Decorating Divas and we will make it for you.  And no, I'm not advertising, simply letting you know that you don't always have to pay exhorbitant prices for items. There are other more affordable options to consider. The reason I started Decorating Divas was for the fact that I refuse to pay some of the ridiculously high prices for something that I can make myself.
