Having launched home-dzine.co.za over three years ago, you can imagine the amount of queries that I have received over this period of time. Some ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, others hilarious, and then there are those that are serious about wanting to improve or decorate their home.
After receiving at least at thousand requests to sell the projects that I make for the website, the online magazine, and now for The Home Handyman, I decided that perhaps the time had come to give in and set up an inhouse workshop. Nancy (my partner) and I have been having so much fun over the past couple of months, it's a good job I'm a workaholic or I would have worn myself out by now. While making projects for the website was great fun, we are having even more fun restoring old furniture, applying paint techniques, building theme beds, designing headboards, and even designing, painting and printing our own fabric.
I take my hat off to anyone who does this for a living - it really is hard work. The one project that we have just completed was a dining suite covered with at least 10 layers of enamel paint. The client requested a distressed ivory finish, and fabric with seashells for a beach-theme. Well, it took us two weeks of non-stop sanding to get to the bottom of the paint, and then we had to apply a base coat primer and sand it all over again. Finally, we applying the first step in the paint technique, and yet again had to sand, before applying the final step. Both Nancy and I lost all feeling in our hands and for two days solid it actually felt like we were still holding a sander!
The project is now complete and well worth all the hard work. We will be delivered to the client this week and I cannot wait to see her reaction when she sees her completely different dining suite. I'll keep you posted.
