Green crochet accessories

Hestelle Robinson

I have been meaning to do this blog for weeks now and every time I started something “more important” popped up!

“Well here it is” she says with determination ensuring that nothing will interrupt this 20min blog - a short and sweet one as you know this time of the year is absolute madness here at HOMEMAKERS as we are in full swing preparations for our Gauteng expo which is on at the Coca-Cola Dome from 18-21 February.  But more about that in later blogs.

In November last year our show was nominated for an EXSA award – Best Large Consumer Show – which we subsequently won YEEEEEAH us!  But that’s not the topic of this blog… going green is.

At the mentioned awards the challenge to delegates was to dress green and as I was fresh out of hemp to sew myself a dress with the help of the eco-friendly godmother and fairy mice I had to come up with an alternative.  Took me two days of pondering but eventually I got that AHA moment and decided to go with eco-friendly accessories, and then ended up crocheting myself a handbag, necklace and earrings from plastic bags.

By the way, crochet was my passion for 2009. Somewhere in March last year I Googled how to crochet, discovered Attic24 and that was me in love with this folk art, and … ahem … proceeded to crochet four blankets for the year  - I know that sounds a bit obsessive compulsive hey!  Will share pics at a later stage.

Well check it out … here are my handmade “green accessoriescrochet from plastic bags.

Cool hey?! Even if I do say so myself.

Note of warning though: this crocheting is not for sissies the “yarn” is really a bit tough on the hands and best done over a couple of days (do not attempt to speed-crochet over two nights because you left it too late like I did).

See below a lill pictorial on how to make the plastic bag yarn.

Chat soon to share my new passion for 2010 …

Now just think of all the cool things you can make for your home and be good to mother earth by keeping these plastic bags away from the landfills!
