1. Draw and Plan a Map
a. Which part of the garden gets sun, shade and wind?
b. Where do people walk, sit and play in the garden?
c. Where are the buildings, plants, trees and rocks?
d. Now draw your Food Garden on your Map.
2. Prepare the Garden Patch
a. Measure out the hole you want to dig
b. Mark it with string and stones
c. One Spade length wide, one spade length deep and two spade lengths length
d. Dig out the soil from the hole
e. Put leaves and grass at the bottom of the hole and wet it
f. Put back the soil
3. Make the soil healthy
a. Add earth worms
b. Mix some compost into the soil
c. Cover the whole patch with mulch (dried leaves, grass or even newspaper)
4. Gather Seeds
a. Decided what you want to plant. It’s a good idea to start with vegetables that your family likes to eat
b. Buy or collect seeds
5. Plant the Seeds
a. How deep and far apart should you plant your seeds?
b. Ask a good gardener to help you.
c. Plant seeds every two weeks so you can have veggies throughout the year.
d. You can even plants seeds into old milk cartons until they are strong enough to be planted.
6. Water, Weed and Protect your Garden
a. Water the seeds and seedlings every day - in the later afternoon in summer and the late morning in winter.
b. Catch your own rain water from your drains in buckets and use this to water your seedlings
c. Dig shallow ditches to lead rain water into your garden
d. Spray natural pesticides (Chilli Insect Spray) on the veggies to keep the insects away.
e. Make a spray using sunlight liquid, old stompies (cigarette butts – the tobacco), chilli powder, garlic and water.
f. Pull out the weeds regularly.
