Lighting your home

Published : 12/05/2008   |   Author: HOMEMAKERSonline

Light is absolutely essential in all homes. Be sure to always select energy efficient lights as you will not only save money on your electricity bill, but you’ll do your bit to save the environment too.

Each room in your home requires different types of lighting, as each room receives light during different times of the day.

Lights are also used for security purposes to deter crime.

Bathroom Lighting

In this room the lighting is both functional and a contributing factor to a relaxing atmosphere. Consider having a dimmer installed, this will help with the mood especially when you want to unwind. Good accent and task lighting will accommodate the practical requirements.
Task lighting: It is absolutely necessary to have the correct lighting in your bathroom for tasks such as; shaving and putting on make-up.
Accent Lighting: draws attention to focal points, such as a recessed light in a bathroom cabinet.

Bedroom Lighting

As with the bathroom a bedroom requires different types of light for different purposes. When it is dark at night and first thing in the morning sufficient light is required. A good reading light is ideal if you enjoy unwinding with a good book after a long day. There should be no shadows that fall onto the book. Select a reading lamp that provides you with the best task lighting. Down lights (small lights fitted in the ceiling and trough lights (florescent lights fitted in a recess in the ceiling) can illuminate the bedroom in an interesting manner. This is a relatively easy and affordable way to give your bedroom a designer finish.

Kitchen Lighting

The secret to good kitchen lighting is again, to position the lights in such a way as not to cast shadows. The easiest way to achieve this is remember that the light must be in front of you when working in the kitchen and not behind you, this will make sure that you can always see what you are doing. If the kitchen is also used to dine in then a dimmer may be installed to create atmosphere or a trendy chandelier can be hung over the dinning table. Proper task lighting in a kitchen is always a pleasure. A good addition will be to place recess lighting under the cupboard that shine on the work space. An adjustable light will make working in the kitchen a little more comfortable.

Living Room Lighting

Lighting in the living room has to be multifunctional as it is a multiple purpose room. Create the ideal atmosphere by combining task and accent lighting. The light should point in different directions and vary in intensity. Atmospheric lighting should be soft and not shine in people’s faces. When choosing decorative lighting choose a material that suits the room’s décor, for example, stainless steel will work well in a contemporary living room, if you are more of a romantic, a chandelier will work best. A lamp placed in the corner of the room can make it appear bigger as it makes you focus on the side of the room.

Stairways should always be well light; this will prevent anyone from missing their footing in the dark.

If you plan light properly, the correct lighting can create breathtaking changes in your home.
