Balustrades aren’t merely staircase fashion accessories; they provide structure and safety while reflecting homeowners’ personalities. The balustrade can also be called a handrail, which is supported by short pillars, called balusters.
- Trends
There are no rules when designing the look you want for balustrades. The current trend is to combine a modern look with nature, so homeowners are mixing timber with fabricated steel. Glass is also a popular style, but is a pricey option for most budgets. It is also high maintenance and needs to be constantly cleaned – if you have children – glass can be hard work.
Wire balustrades have dominated the market for some time and are an attractive option suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
Timber is the most popular contemporary choice of material for a baluster and is teaming up with fabricated steel balusters. The full metal industrial look has had its day as people warm to a more natural look and feel
- Specifications
Staircase manufacturers don’t recommend that the stairwell is too narrow. The width between balusters should measure 125mm.
Balustrades should stand a minimum height of one metre from the stair surface, whether that surface is timber or carpet.
- Balcony
An outdoor balustrade around a balcony offers an uninterrupted view while providing a safety barrier and giving a contemporary look to outdoor living areas. The glass used can be 8, 10, 12 or 15mm thick toughened safety glass and can carry various watermark patterns, tinting or frosting.
- Swimming pool
Glass balustrades around a swimming pool are a unique way to pair safety fencing with a stylish, modern finish. This is an expensive option though, so not ideal for those on a tight budget.
