Here are three common carpet cleaning problems and how to clean them up.

1. Red Wine

  • Firstly, with a dry cloth, dab as much of the wine up as possible.
  • Use a good wine stain remover and use it according to the directions on the packaging.
  • Spray the solution on and simply dab with a damp cloth to remove.

2. Crayons or Ink

  • Fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol.
  • Apply it to the marked spot and dab with a cloth.
  • Keep working, spraying and dabbing until the spot is completely gone.

3. Coffee

  • Keep soda water on hand for these spills.
  • Pour the soda water directly onto the spot.
  • Dab with a clean cloth.
  • The carbonation will force the stain to bubble up and the salts will keep the spot from staining.
  • If you have any remaining stain, use your favourite carpet stain remover.
  • Don’t brush the carpet, as it will only make it fuzzy and rough.

Remember: When removing carpet stains, dab, dab, dab. No brushing, ever!

Professional Carpet Cleaning:

  • You should have your carpets professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months whether they are heavily stained or not, to keep them in a good condition. The heat will remove deep stains and kill allergens.
  • Look for a trained technician, a company that has insurance and that constantly trains their staff.
