A kitchen backsplash is the area between the countertops and the underside of the kitchen cupboards, it is also the wall behind the stove and sink and is installed for protection against moisture and grease.
Backsplash has become an important design feature and materials can range from ceramic tile, natural stone, glass, concrete, stainless steel, mosaic and even bamboo and Perspex. A kitchen tile backsplash is perhaps the most popular choice of materials, but don’t let that stop you from trying something exciting and different.
A tile backsplash will last for years and looks good too. It is durable, easy to clean, colourful and can add texture to an otherwise dull, flat, boring wall space. In recent years, there seems to have been an explosion of tile colours, patterns, styles, and textures, many of which are perfect for areas directly behind a kitchen sink and cook-top areas. They offer an inexpensive opportunity to create a custom look and are easy to install. The grout, however, must be cleaned and resealed regularly.
The most durable natural stone for a backsplash is granite. However, it should be re-sealed twice a year to maintain protection from moisture. Marble is a beautiful, low maintenance material, but it is very porous and will absorb grease and dirt.
A look that is resurfacing from the 50’s is the textured glass backsplash. The decorative glass offers an interesting texture and dimension to a traditional uninspiring flat surface. The trend of placing an image behind the glass has emerged and is used effectively by designers. The benefits of glass include the fact that it is non-porous; it does not absorb moisture or odours and repels mould and mildew. A glass backsplash is also very easy to clean and won’t require major maintenance.
The kitchen backsplash is often an afterthought when deciding on the kitchen’s decor. Instead it should be included in the initial design as it can enhance the whole room.
