The bathroom must be one of the areas in your home where the most water is used and often wasted because we do not realise the impact our bad “bathroom habits” have on the environment. One often do not realise how much water gets wasted by simple things like for instance flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Here are a few tips to help you keep your bathroom water wise …
Fix leaks:
A leaking tap or water pipe in the bathroom can let a lot of water go to waste. A small leak can lead to an amount of about 50 litres of water going to waste daily. Taps must also always be closed properly. Remember that when a warm water tap is not closed properly, you will be wasting water and electricity.
Recycle water:
There are a few ways to recycle and reuse the water that you use in your home. One of the easiest ways to save water by recycling is to use your bathwater to wet the garden. Hansgrohe’s Pontos Aqua Cycle recycle and purify used water and then integrates it back into the system to be used to flush the toilet, wet the garden or do the washing.
Only open a tap when you’re actually going to use water:
Rather fill the basin with a little bit of water while you are shaving or washing your face instead of leaving the tap on while doing so. Also close the tap while you are busy brushing your teeth and only open it to rinse out your mouth and the basin.
Take a shower:
It takes about 150 litres of water to fill a bathtub, so it really is better to shower instead as it usually uses a lot less water to do so. Don’t shower for longer than 5 minutes and close the taps while you are shampooing your hair. If you don’t have a shower in your home, only fill a third of your tub with water. Start with cold water and add warm water as needed.
Don’t use your toilet as a waste bin:
A lot of water goes to waste when you flush the toilet unnecessarily. Don’t use your toilet to dispose of used tissues, sanitary towels, cotton buds or cigarettes – rather use the bin for these items. You’ll be amazed at how much water you could save this way.
