If you are looking at giving that very special person in your live, your mom, something different this Mother’s Day why not consider a green gift something with a lighter carbon footprint which is kinder to your other mother... earth.

We have a few ideas for you...

Herbs

Instead of giving her some flowers buy her a pot of herbs, she can leave this on her kitchen' windowsill and cook you a stunning meal with fresh herbs.

Adopt a pet

Contact your local zoo or the National Zoological Gardens and adopt a wild pet.  Do not worry you do not get to take it home, Mom’s wild fury friend stays in its enclosure at the zoo and she gets a certificate to boast her ownership.

Plant a tree

This year the Tree of the year is the Acacia galpinii (Money thorn/Apiesdoring).  You should be able to purchase it from any reputable nursery.  You and Mom can have your very own tree-planting-ceremony and feel warm and fuzzy about reducing your carbon footprint.

If mud and digging is not your thing you can buy a cyber tree from Trees for Africa.  They will plant the tree on your behalf and will send you an electronic certificate.

Green Day Out

Visit your local botanical gardens for a great green outing, most of them present special programmes on days such as Mother’s DayThis is really a great yet affordable day out.  Pack your own picket basket (remember to take a bag for all your rubbish) and enjoy some fresh air with your loved ones.  One of the most beautiful botanical gardens in South Africa is definitely the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort, this Sunday they are presenting a Music for Mom Concert .

So go on give your mom a green spoil this Mother’s Day.
