With the rainy summer Gauteng has been experiencing, ants have become a tremendous problem, as well as flies and cockroaches. It almost seems as if these creatures are trying to seek for a dry, safe area to live in inside your home – and unfortunately we can not live together in harmony.

Ants are not seasonal but some species are more visible in summer as they swarm in large numbers from their nests. They are then attracted into buildings due to the interior lights. Food sources and warmer temperatures will also attract ants into your home. Another element affecting the number of ants is the climate and weather conditions. Around the country, different species of ants can be found and control methods for each varies. This is why it is so difficult to control them. Ants are attracted to sugar and many other types of food and water as they need proteins and carbohydrates in their diets.

Cockroaches are not only gross, but they can also spread a wide variety of harmful bacteria. They thrive in warm, humid and unhygienic conditions. So if you have a little moist and warmth around your home, be certain that you will have a few unwanted guests.

Houseflies are one of the most irritating pests around and you can hardly keep slapping them, as you will not be able to kill all of them. They are instantly attracted to food, garbage, human skin etc. and always come in their masses for action.

Basic tips for home pest control:

Limited food source: Flies can’t breed in large numbers if food sources are limited. Don’t allow materials like garbage or other decaying organic matter to accumulate in your home. Keep trash cans clean and covered. Empty the kitchen’s rubbish bin regularly.

Keep them out: Flies can be kept out of your home by using window and door screens. Always ensure that there are no openings to let them through.

Clean as a whistle: Clean your home thoroughly twice per week. Clean regularly underneath the fridge, stove, toaster and other movable appliances.
Do not leave out pets’ food or food scraps in pet bowls.

Stop dripping: Ensure there are no sources of water such as a dripping tap, as pests need a steady water supply to survive.

Mayor repairs: Repair any holes, cracks or gaps in the walls, skirting boards and inside cupboards.

If you have covered the basics, tried all the natural and home remedies, without success, then it is time to get mean in order to get your home back – this doesn’t necessarily have to include spray cans and other irritants.
