bathroom in your bedroom
latest trends in bathrooms

The days of closing the door on the bathroom are over and you’ll be right on trend if you incorporate this essential room into the bedroom.

Many contemporary houses suffer from a lack of space, which is particularly evident when it comes to the bathroom.  Fortunately, there are a wealth of creative options to be considered when remodelling, including the latest design trend which sees the bathroom being included in the bedroom. This innovative method of maximising the area on hand means that the bathroom is no longer neglected and hidden; it is considered together with the bedroom as a holistic modern sanctuary from fast-paced living.

There are some practical considerations to keep in mind when planning a bathroom-within-a-bedroom.  For example, one must remember that reduced privacy is a natural consequence, but easily remedied by the creative placement of walls, frosted glass screens and even curtaining.  In addition, ample ventilation and the correct drainage are required to ensure that the moisture inherent in bathrooms is adequately dispersed.

Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager at Tile Africa offers the following handy tips to help you transform your bedroom into a bohemian boudoir:

  • Select beautifully decorative tiles and fittings that can be displayed as features
  • Freestanding baths placed near windows or in the centre of the room are attractive focus points that usually require less space than traditional baths
  • Basins that are part of vanity units create storage space that a pedestal basin does not
  • Integrate the colours of your bedroom and bathroom to ensure the flow from one room into the other, or use colour to create contrast, emphasizing the different zones in a single room
  • Place all plumbing along one wall to streamline the “operational” elements in the room
