Customise your Headboard

Since the bed is a basic commodity for sleep comfort there is always a need to make it more appealing and comfortable.

With each bed comes a headboard and its basic function as we all know is stop those irritations of the pillows and other bed linen falling off the back in the middle of the night.

Today, not only is the headboard practical, but is it often bought for aesthetic purposes not only creating the main focal point for the bed, but often for the whole bedroom too.  Whether they are modern or antique, headboards are a must in bedroom decor, giving you the opportunity to make a big statement in your room scheme.

Choosing to build, design or upholster your own headboard, gives you the freedom to create a piece of functionally usable artwork that will suit your needs and taste perfectly.

Apart from hanging pictures, photo boxes and family artworks, here are some unique headboard ideas to get you started:

Mirror Door

Have an old mirror door or even a crafted wooden door that is no longer being used? Upcycle it by turning it into a custom made headboard. Remove the hinges and do all the necessary sanding and touch up painting. Determine the placement of the bed and toenail the door into studs in the wall.

Headboard Storage

Many of us just never have enough space, and using your headboard functionally is a great idea. Why not get organised and build a headboard from an old shelving unit and create a wraparound headboard that is complete with storage for books and collectables. Lights can also be fitted to the headboard to create an illuminated feature and will serve well for the purpose of late night reading.

Painted Headboard

For this DIY bedroom makeover, the headboard is painted directly onto the wall. Tracing paper can be used to create a pattern that is in the duvet or your very own creation of pictures, patterns and designs can be incorporated. This is a great idea if the headboard is only to serve a decorative purpose and works exceptionally well in children’s rooms where your imagination is the limit.

The comfort of padding

Upholster your current headboard with padding, preferably memory foam, and some material, whether it be new or previously used, leather or velvet. Instead of the traditional tufted approach, you could also create a grid of squares covered in various fabrics or even pillows. This gives you the opportunity to customise your headboard to match your decor in the bedroom, all while creating a cosy feel from the material instead of your usual cold wood and metal options.

Chainlink Headboard

Here is a great idea for a guy’s bedroom, a headboard made of chainlink fencing. This creates the perfect heavy metal, industrial look and is practically indestructible.

Screen Headboard

One of the easiest ways to transform the look of your bed is with a unique screen. Whether it’s custom made, found at an antique store or bought from your local @ home, the screen can be customised with pictures and decor to create the perfect setting.

Canopy

Extend the headboard with a fabric canopy for a dramatic impact. This cosy canopy effect can be used to create that fairytale bedroom for your daughter or that chic and stylish look for your main bedroom.
