Football mania is expected to reach fever pitch in mid June when the whistle blows for the first World Cup match at Soccer City in Soweto. There will be fans in the stands, in their living rooms, in sports bars and anywhere live coverage is available. In South Africa, it’s going to be party season with a capital ‘P’. Whether your team’s match is preceded by a braai, a lawn or pool party, or just a communal gathering of friends and family, you want to get the ambience right. Radiant has some ideas to light the way.

First up, you want your team’s colours on display – and we all know there’s more than one team you will be rooting for depending on ‘lady luck’ and how skilful favourites prove to be on the day.

Light emitting diode (LED) tube lights, which you can buy by the meter in a range of colours (green, yellow, red, blue), offer myriad possibilities. These tubes are highly flexible and weather proof so you can twine and wind them around pillars and trees, or inside your home around doorframes, in the shape of a team logo or along walls. You can even try your hand at creating a light sculpture by winding tubes around a football-like object which can act as a centrepiece in the garden. LED’s are also extremely energy efficient so at least you will keep your electricity bill down at the same time!

If you are after a lighter, more sophisticated look, try some decorative fairy lights in different shapes – in the garden, indoors or even on the dining table. There are also finer net-like LED-lit mesh lights that can be hung across a window or displayed in bar areas. The colours of the down-lights along walkways or in the home’s entertainment areas can be changed to create a softer light hearted mood, and there are also coloured globes for pendant lights, table lights or occasional lamps.

And of course you cannot do without LED ice for your guests’ drinks. Another innovation from Radiant, these little plastic jewels look like ice blocks but have tiny LED’s inside that change colour. Imagine their effect in brightly coloured cocktails – on a balcony overlooking a cityscape or by the poolside.

On which note you may want to investigate the latest in pool lights - Radiant has one that is pretty intelligent! It gives you 12 different colour options to choose from according to your preferences. You can select green or gold to support the home team or Brazil’s Samba Kings (also green and yellow) or maybe you want to rustle up some French ‘tricolour’ or the traditional red or white of the England team.

If you have no pool, lift your gaze to your security lighting. Radiant has globes in a number of colours that will suit most standard security fittings.

The World Cup will put South Africa firmly in the global spotlight for four weeks. Add a little imagination, some light-hearted creativity and colour, some friends and a sporting spirit and you may just create an event that is remembered for more than just that defining goal that puts your team into the finals.
