Many of us will be spending the month of June glued to the TV set and relaxing in the television room watching the greatest football spectacular. Whether the room you’ve assigned for this thrilling pastime is a dedicated room in the house or a spare room, think about transforming it into a space where family and friends can come together and enjoy every moment of this wonderful game.

“A television room should reflect the personality of the people living in the home and shouldn’t be boring. Now is the time to think about transforming it into a space that pulsates with energy thanks to the clever use of colour,” says Anne Roselt, colour manager at Plascon.

Take your inspiration from the various flags of the participating countries. These colours are not dull and toned-down, but bright and energetic. Think of the Brazilian flag with its vivid green and buttery yellow, the Danish and English flags with their brilliant red and our own multi-coloured flag.

Consider the mood you want to create - yellows will add some sunshine and happiness, shades of orange can add to the fun and social atmosphere, whilst reds will give a dramatic effect. Greens, such as lime green makes for a funky space and a combination of these colours will most definitely get everyone in a cheerful atmosphere.

f you are nervous of bright colours, start with a feature wall, for example the wall behind the television. “A feature wall immediately gives the room a lift and a new look,” she says. Paint the wall in a favourite colour or a colour that features in the furnishings in the room, for example a flower in the curtains or a piece of artwork. This will ensure that the feature wall blends in. Forget about wallpaper, stencilling is much more fun. Select or make a stencil design to replicate your favourite team’s emblem or flag. Other stencil options include geometric patterns or even horizontal stripes, which are very trendy at the moment.

Any change, big or small, can lift the tone and mood of a room and alter the way you feel about your space. Paint is one of the most affordable decorating tools and can completely change the look of a TV room. Whether you paint one feature wall or all four walls, paint makes it easy to transform a dreary or outdated room into an exciting space where the family can relax in front of the television.
