If your bathroom hasn't been upgraded recently, you may be surprised to find there's a whole new range of styles to choose from. Styles such as Victorian-romantic, ultra modern and contemporary or earthy, today’s bathrooms are a showroom of their own.
When you upgrade your bathroom to a look reminiscent of the art deco period, complement the space with colourful artwork and gilded mirror frames. Black and white tiles are timeless and exceptionally versatile, making it easy to combine with contemporary or chic designs. They offer a fresh, clean, elegant and an unquestionably sophisticated look to your bathroom.
However, if you are looking for a more quirky approach that reflects your personality, then an eclectic style is definitely for you. Use elements from different sources, styles and eras to make up a look that is highly individual. It is in a way “anti-fashion” as it refuses to be put in a box. “To create an eclectic bathroom, or any room for that matter, a person needs a sense of confidence and a willingness to experiment,” says Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager for Tile Africa.
A good starting point is a favourite piece of furniture, old fabric or picture, which has happy associations for the owner. This you can always combine with other pieces old and new to create a harmonious whole. The harmony comes from the fact that all the elements are loved by the owner rather than all the elements being the same style.
“When you are looking to achieve balance in your bathroom try to avoid putting in too many interesting and unusual elements because the effect then becomes cluttered and overwhelming,” says van Niekerk. A few judiciously placed pieces invite the viewer to go closer and examine. “Humour and whimsy are important elements. Include some family snaps on the wall and pieces to make you smile,” she says.
It is always good to add colour in your bathroom to avoid a dull and bland looking room. Items such as coloured tiles, bright glass mosaics, paint on walls and doors, and accessories will lighten up the mood in your bathroom.
