The curtains you bought for the spare bedroom are still packed away in the linen cupboard, you are waiting for your husband to put the curtain railing up.  The blender you got for Christmas is still in its box, you are waiting for your husband to change the plug.  Sound familiar?  Waiting for someone to help you do something you cannot is most definitely one of the most frustrating and irritating things.

Stop waiting for someone to give you a DIY hand around the house, empower yourself with some basic skills, and you will be amazed at how easy it really is. Get rid of that frustration and start doing it yourself!

Annalien Grensemann
, well-known DIY-enthusiast, shares her thoughts and knowledge with us.  Annalien’s mission has always been to empower a variety of people, from the young first-timers to DIY-enthusiast who needs ideas and inspiration. She has been DIY-ing since 1995 and nurtured her passion over the years with hands-on exercises, she is quite outspoken about which tools she prefers to work with: “I got the opportunity to work with Bosch tools,” she says, “and I completely fell in love with the creative freedom the tools gave me.”

When asked what her favourite Bosch tool is, she answers without hesitation: “The Bosch Uneo – a lithium-ion, cordless rotary hammer/drill. I couldn’t believe that Bosch could bring out a tool that is so small, light and easy to work with.” She also believes that a tool that every DIY-er should have is the Bosch PFS spray gun. “Not only does it ensure perfectly smooth results when varnishing or painting, but you can paint literally any surface without getting dirty,” she says.

Bosch also has a very interactive website, filled with handy DIY-tips and projects, for those of you who would like to get things done around the house.

We asked Bosch to help you install that curtain rail that you have been nagging about.

Install a curtain rail with Bosch!

Putting up a curtain railing is a lot easier than it looks and takes you only five minutes with the Bosch Uneo.

Shopping list:

  • 2 curtain rods of the required length
  • 4 tie backs
  • Screws and plugs (6mm)
  • 4 brackets
  • Curtains – to fit the size of your windows

Tool list:

  • Tape measure
  • Bosch PCL 20 Cross Line Laser Level
  • Bosch Uneo

Instructions:

Step 1:

Measure Bracket Holes: Using a Bosch PCL 20 Cross Line Laser Level place a small pencil mark 4 inches outside the window frame. This will become the point from which all other measurements will be made. Trace the vertical line upwards using a PCL 20, offer up the bracket and mark the top of the bracket. Offer up the bracket itself to this line and mark through the fixing holes.

Step 2:

Fix the First Bracket: Use your Uneo to drill into the brickwork, make sure you use the masonry drill bit and set the Uneo to hammer action. Only drill into the wall as deep as the wall anchors are long. Then gently tap the plastic anchors into the hole until they are flush and screw the bracket to the wall.

Step 3:

Fix the Second Bracket: Using the PCL 20, measure across from the first bracket hole to the second and measure out 4 inches away from the frame as with bracket one. Then using your Uneo, drill the bracket holes in exactly the same way as before.

Step 4:

Fix the Curtain: Once both brackets are fixed to the wall you can attach your curtain.

Choosing the perfect curtain tieback

Every nice set of curtains will inevitably need a decent set of tiebacks to give your room that elegant finish. Here are a few tips to ensure that you make the right decision:

  • The heavier the drapery, the larger and bulkier the curtain tieback should be.
  • Your tieback should compliment the theme and colour scheme of the room and the curtains. It should also compliment the mood and atmosphere you are trying to create.
Tiebacks should not only be functional, but also make a statement as part of the décor in a specific room.
