The time has come for clocks to drop its mr-accountant-I-keep-time attitude, bling up and step out all dressed up and decorative.

Let’s have a look at clocks and alarm clocks, where they come from and find our where they are going.

About clocks

According to Wikipedia the word ‘clock’ is derived from the Celtic words ‘clagan’ and ‘clocca’ meaning ‘bell’. The clock is one of the oldest human inventions. Way back during the old times, people relied on sun and water to measure time. Time readings were not accurate then, not until the discovery of mechanical and electrical clocks. A mechanical clock is composed of a set of gears, a spring and a weight that is responsible for the clock’s movement, while an electrical clock uses electricity or battery as a power source. Later on, modern technology introduced atomic and digital clocks and still continues to study for ways to improve it.

Different types of clocks

World clocks

If you want to know what time it is elsewhere in the world, this clock is for you! A clock that displays the current time in different parts of the world is called a world clock. A world clock is divided into zones. Each zone represents a group of countries sharing the same time.

Wall clocks

This is the most common clock you will find in a modern day home or establishment. They can be seen on houses, hotels, banks, churches, hospitals and offices. They are almost everywhere.

Alarm clocks

Alarm clocks are standard clocks with added special clock parts to allow an extra feature. A built-in alarm system causes the clock to automatically buzz or ring if a chosen time is up.

Grandfather clocks

Grandfather clocks are big clocks that usually stand tall. It has a pendulum that swings back and forth, each swing representing a second. These clocks were are often seen in homes with and antique look and feel.

What is available?

According to Chris Charlton-Jones from Century Clocks you have to keep the following in mind when choosing the perfect clock:

“When choosing a clock one needs to take into account the surrounding decor and colour schemes. Neutral colours like Aluminium, black or white are versatile and can suite most rooms and styles. The space in which the clock will be hung must be taken into consideration. A clock that is too big will be over powering, and if it is too small the clock will be lost. Other than that choosing the perfect clock will be determined by your personal preference.”

Century Clocks has been in the clock business for 25 years. They are the only company in South Africa that is only dedicated to clocks and time related products.
