Jazz up your home’s walls, from the bathroom to the entrance hall, with tiled borders or if you’re after something fanciful add a little Italian flair with listelli.
Borders allow you to add interesting texture to your walls and the creative possibilities are endless. Wide or narrow, horizontal or vertical, borders can be created with beautiful listelli, tiles cut into different sizes or colourful mosaics.
The word listelli is derived from the Italian word listello or listel meaning narrow border or band. Crafted from glass, marble and polished stone, listelli provide a stylish border to a tiled wall and draw attention when fitted between wall tiles.
“Use listelli and borders wherever your creative mind takes you, walls or floors in any room will be enchanted by their magic,” says Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager for Tile Africa. In a bathroom they work as a border between tiles or can be used to edge a bath box or built-in vanity, or as a striking frame around a mirror.
When a border is applied in the bathroom, plan for it to be placed at about two to three tile widths above the basin and vanity or below the mirror to ensure it catches the eye. To further enhance the feature wall you can lay the tiles above the border at a 45-degree angle.
“A fashionable border can also be crafted with mosaics or by cutting tiles into narrow strips,” says van Niekerk. If you are after something different and creative; tile the wall with one tile and create a vertical or horizontal band with the same tile cut into different sizes. This look works well with walls in the entrance area of your home and with exterior walls enclosing the braai or patio area.
Listelli come in 250 to 300mm lengths and vary between R50 and R100 a piece. Natural stone listelli are especially chic, but can be a bit pricey. For a similar effect that is cost-effective use glass mosaic sheets and cut these horizontally into two or three strips. Mosaic sheets range from 150 to 230mm in length and cost approximately R90 per sheet, depending on the material, and one sheet can produce a border of up to one running metre.
