Classic Architecture
Cape Dutch Houses and Other Old Favourites
Author: Phillida Brooke Simons
Published by Random House Struik
We have all seen them, whitewashed houses with ornate gables and thatched roofs, set against the backdrop of Table Mountain and the ocean. What I have just described is generally known as ‘Cape Dutch’-style houses and form part of our rich and interesting history and cultural heritage. This book is all about these architectural classics and other favourites that form part of the Cape-style homes and buildings. A thoroughly researched and informative text describes the physical features of individual buildings, as well as their histories and those of their owners. Eleven regions within the south-western Cape are covered, from central Cape Town to the West Coast, including the towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Worcester.
While each house is illustrated with at least one full-colour photograph, certain subjects, such as the Castle in Cape Town, Stellenbosch’s Village Museum complex and the Mamre Mission, are dealt with at length. Particularly characteristic areas, like the Bo-Kaap in Cape Town, or the Bottelary region near Stellenbosch, are also given special treatment. Definitely a must-have for anyone who is passionate about classical architecture.

Frogs & Frogging in South Africa
Author: Vincent Carruthers and Louis du Preez
Published by Random House Struik
Personally I am not very fond of these slimy, cold creatures that pop up at the most unexpected and inconvenient times during rain season, but, like any other animal, they most certainly serve a purpose. Because some frogs can be quite poisonous, it is always a good idea to have a reference book around in case of an emergency. This colourful guide is such a book. Frogs & Frogging in South Africa offers amateur froggers an accessible and practical introduction to frog identification. This second edition of the highly popular guide has been expertly revised and fully updated to reflect the latest advances in taxonomy and nomenclature. It offers:
- all of the species in Africa south of latitude 22 °S;
- a section on frog biology and behaviour;
- how to photograph frogs and record their calls;
- how to attract frogs to your garden, and ideas for projects such as building a pond;
- the range of frog species to be found in different environmental niches;
- maps and colourful photographs with the updated accounts;
- a new key to the identification of tadpole genera;
- a CD with all 115 frog calls, which offer one of the best ways to find.
This book is also available in Afrikaans.
About the authors:
Vincent Carruthers is a company director, author and environmental consultant. He is a registered professional scientist specialising in amphibians and wetlands, and an amateur historian.
