One of my favourite things to do on a weekend, especially during summer, is to go and watch a good movie at my local cinema. It also used to be one of the things on the cards when my godchildren came to visit. But with the price of a movie ticket being what it is, this has become quite the expensive outing, and if you add some popcorn and a drink – it is not worth it at all.

Luckily big companies like Samsung, Sony and Hisense have done their utmost to provide us with home entertainment equipment that will make us feel like we are at the cinemas without leaving the house – which is also a fantastic idea for cold winter evenings. Although the initial cost of home entertainment systems is a bit high – the value of entertainment you will get from it makes it worthwhile – especially in the long run.

I did some online shopping to see what is available in the world of home entertainment this winter! I decided to start at the basics and focus on televisions first.

Keep an eye on our website next month to learn more about the latest Blu-Ray technology!

LED televisions

According to Wikipedia.org, LED televisions can be described as follows: “An LED-backlight LCD television is an LCD TV that uses LED backlighting instead of the CCFL’s used in traditional LCD televisions. It is not a true LED display but is called “LED TV” by some manufacturers. The use of LED backlighting has a dramatic impact, resulting in a thinner panel, less power consumption and better heat dissipation, and a brighter display with better contrast levels.”

And this is most definitely the way forward in the world of television and entertainment – it is no wonder that manufacturers are all exploring and developing this type of technology and combining it with other fascinating features!

Samsung

3D is BIG this year – not only at the theatres, but also at home!

According to my research Samsung has taken the world of television to the next level with their LED Series 8 and Plasma Series 7 TV’s, which have been designed with the most advanced 3D imaging technology. This will allow you to enjoy the 3D experience from the comfort of your couch. They offer the total package, including a 3D Blu-ray disc player and 3D active glasses. Below is more information on the product I looked at:

Samsung Series 7 and 8 3D LED TV’s

Samsung HDTV’s are easy on the planet—and on your eyes. This television’s unique Eco Sensor measures the intensity of the room’s light and automatically calibrates the brightness of the image on the screen.

Other features include:

3D functionality: Samsung innovation has even made it possible to convert your favourite 2D movies to 3D.

Wide Colour Enhancer: The Wide Colour Enhancer Pro feature analyses each pixel, and stretches them to their 3-dimensional limit. What you get is the fullest, most lifelike colours you’ve ever seen on a TV that is.

Infinite entertainment with Internet@TV: Samsung’s exclusive Internet@TV technology lets enjoy all the brilliant content the Web has to offer, from online movies and music, to people – on Twitter and various pc’s.

HDMI: All it takes is one cable to connect your TV to your other audio and video sources. The HDMI slot allows you to import all kinds of content without compression including pictures and videos from your digital camcorders and multimedia pc’s.

Mega Contrast Ratio: It intuitively adjusts the LED backlight for every frame. Whites are more pristine. Shades of blacks are pure. And the depths of every colour are brilliantly pronounced.

● No ghost images: The innovative algorithm makes it possible for backlight technology to adjust even the smallest details to deliver a crisp picture with intense contrast.

Swivel Stand: The swivel stand allows any person at any angle to enjoy a great view without much hassle.

Extended PVR: The extended PVR feature makes catching up on your favourite shows convenient and easy. Simply plug in your USB memory and HDD and select the channel, time, and date in the menu and let PVR feature do the rest.

Sony

60 inch LX900 Series 3D Full HD BRAVIA LCD TV

Stay connected and enjoy a 3D experience with Sony’s latest technology! By using high frame rate LCD’s with a “frame sequential display”, Sony makes it possible to watch Full HD 3D quality video on 3D compatible BRAVIA LCD TVs. This technology involves alternately transmitting images for the left eye and right eye to the screen.

Other features include

Internet video: With BRAVIA Internet Video, your television is now a true all-in-one entertainment centre that allows you to access your favourite video websites straight on your BRAVIA with quick access to YouTube, Style.com, BlipTV, Singing Fool, and many more sites.

Edge LED: This backlight technology results in a much thinner and lighter BRAVIA when compared to conventional direct-type backlight system televisions. The result is a more efficient light transmission process and lower power consumption without any compromise to picture quality.

Live Colour™: It is able to reproduce incredibly vivid colours and allows you to choose just how vivid you want your images to be.
BRAVIA Engine 3: BRAVIA Engine 3™ is a high definition video processor which reproduces pictures with higher contrast, superior colours, and amazing clarity.
MPEG Noise Reduction: This gets rid of both speck-like noise around subtitles and block noise that are usually found in fast-moving scenes.

BRAVIA Sync: Lets you link all compatible devices together for a simple one-push start-up/shutdown process.

Wi-Fi Integrated: This feature enables you to use the BRAVIA Internet TV & Widgets without any additional wires and lets you experience true freedom from cumbersome and messy cables.

BRAVIA Internet Widgets: Allows you to access the news, weather, and all sorts of information from the Internet directly from your television.

Hisense LED XT39 3D Television

Hisense “Hi-smart” 3D LED XT39 Series is a 3D LED DTV product that is built on a ‘smart-TV’ concept. This 3D LED DTV has a self-developed HITV-OS opened system that allows its consumers to directly download applications from Hisense ‘Software Store’ to the smart TV, including movie, music, news, game, etc. Hisense 3D LED XT39 Series supports emerging 3D content playback. It can also convert ordinary 2D content into a 3D viewing experience.

Other features include:

● Full HD with 3D combo filter.

Gesture control compatible: This presents the latest in movement recognition technology and allows users to control their television sets by using movement. This works by moving your hands in a pulling or pushing movement activating the control to the TV. Gesture control is currently still being researched by Hisense but one of the first devices was on display at our recent product launch that took place in March this year.

● Eco-friendly

● Ultra-slim

● HDMI

● Fitted with two USB ports

● Flawless colour

● Easy media
