SA's Fave pastime the Braai
Braai Buddy 2
Author: De Waal Davis
Publisher: Random House Struik
This not your average chops and boerewors braai-book. No, this is a seriously different recipe book, ideal for those who want to surprise their guests with something different when they come round for a braai. Following the phenomenal success of Braai Buddy and numerous requests for a sequel, author De Waal Davis has once again compiled a magnificent collection of international recipes modified and adapted to South Africa’s favourite national pastime – the braai. The book keeps up with the current trends in taste and cooking style, and there are also sections included on cooking with gas, the pros and cons of wood versus gas, and classic ‘steakhouse’ sauces. The potjie section has recipes from around the world as well as South Africa. Chapters also cover the fire, bastes, dry rubs, glazes, marinades, steaks, beef, chicken, lamb, pork and fish, not forgetting a ‘controversial’ guest list. The humour of the original Braai Buddy is continued in Braai Buddy 2.
Colin Daniel’s cartoon-style illustrations add a further dimension to this recipe compilation, which is for the serious braaier with a serious sense of humour.
A welcome addition to any outdoor kitchen and a great gift for enthusiastic braaiers.

Ferny facts
Ferns of Southern Africa: A Comprehensive Guide
Authors: Neil Crouch; Ronell Klopper; John Burrows and Sandra Burrows
Publisher: Random House Struik
A fern is basically one of those plants that you either love or hate. But the fact that it is a popular specie is a fact that cannot be denied. The strange thing is, that we really do not know much about this plant. There are also so many different types of ferns that you sometimes do not even know that the plant you are looking at is in fact a fern! This comprehensive guide to the ferns of southern Africa (covering South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana and Namibia) throws new light on a category of plants that’s little-described or featured. The guide is user-friendly and accessible and will help you to identify the 315 fern species that occur in these regions. The book contains:
- A double page spread per specie with various photographs.
- Detailed clear descriptions of each specie.
- Tables that highlight differences between similar-looking species
- Distribution maps based on years of intensive fieldwork
- Identification keys to families, genera and species.
This book is truly very informative and it is clear that thorough research went into it. It will most likely become a respected reference guide for identifying ferns throughout the company.
Definitely a must-have if you are a keen gardener or a fern lover.
