Computers and Services

A personal computer (PC) has become a feature in almost every home. PC’s come in various forms including; desktop computers, laptop computers, tablet computers, etc.

The most common operating systems are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Software applications for personal computers include word processing, spreadsheets, games and a myriad of personal productivity and special purpose software, such as photo and video editing programmes. Most home PC’s often have high-speed or dial-up connections to the internet, allowing access to the world wide web and a wide range of other resources.

While early PC owners usually had to write their own programmes to do anything useful with the machines, today’s users have access to a variety of commercial and free software which is easily installed.

A typical hardware setup of a desktop computer is as follows:

·         Computer case with power supply
·         Motherboard
·         Central processing unit
·         Memory card
·         Video card
·         Hard disk
·         Optical disc (usually DVD-ROM or DVD writer)
·         Keyboard and mouse
·         Monitor

These components can easily be put together with a little knowledge on how to assemble a computer. The motherboard is the main part f the computer that connects all devices together. The memory card(s), graphics card and processor are mounted directly onto the motherboard (the processor in a socket and the memory and graphics cards in expansion slots). The mass storage is connected to it with cables and can be installed in a computer case or in a separate case. The keyboard and mouse connect to a panel externally at the back of the computer case. The monitor is also connected to the external panel, either through an onboard port on the motherboard or a port on the graphics card.

There are many companies that offer packages of desktop computers that are already set up, and only minimal installation is required. These companies usually also offer after sale services such as, upgrading of memory and basic repairs.

So, if you’re not a computer nerd and would prefer to leave it up to the professionals have the contact details of a reputable company handy.
