Tiles are one of those timeless household products that will never loose popularity, something that people will always use in their homes. This is a dynamic industry and tile companies are constantly reinventing their products, adjusting and adapting to modern trends and styles.

We spoke to Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager at Tile Africa, to find out what the world of tiles has in store for us this year, and we were quite surprised to hear what she had to say.

Q: What are the latest trends as far as floor tiles are concerned?

A: “The current tile trends are moving towards very long and thin tiles, particularly in the ultra realistic wood-effect finishes for example 800x100mm plank-like formats, with a realistic wood grain relief. Wood look-alike tiles are available in a wide range of colours and textures and the products is a very good imitation of the real thing, without any of the maintenance drawbacks. Another design trend is to use different sizes of tiles together to create texture and interest. Large format polished Porcelain Tiles and Nano-porcelain tiles in neutral shades remain a firm favourite as they are extremely durable and create a spacious atmosphere. Ceramic and porcelain tiles that closely resemble natural stone tiles create a natural look without the extra hassle associated with the professional installation and sealing of natural stone.”
