A bathroom is a hardworking space and investing in your bathroom is, therefore, easy to prioritize. Bathrooms tend to often be the smallest space in a home and are often shared not by 2 but even 4 or 5 people.  Most times a bathroom renovation does not mean expanding the space in square meters but working smart with built-in elements to make the space feel bigger. There are a few very important things to consider when renovating your small bathroom. Storage and Space Planning

Find a purpose for every centimetre in your small bathroom. Where you can spare 10 – 15 centimetres of space,  put it to good use.   

A fun way to utilize small narrow spaces is to install thin towers in those spaces.  Installing a cupboard that looks almost like a spice-rack can make space for many small face cream pots, deodorant cans, extra soaps and razors.  Install these cleverly on the sides of your mirror or next to your basin(s) for easy access. 

Another way is to look at floating shelves above your basin, leaving a bit more service to work with. 

Showers today are quite different from what we used to know in the olden days.  If you didn’t have a hanging wire rack hanging from the tap, your shampoo bottles ended up on the floor.  With today’s open-feel showers you can easily build a shower shelf inside the shower wall that allows enough space for shampoo bottles and even a plant or two. 

Ventilation

A very important item to consider when renovating your small bathroom is good ventilation.  After a warm and steamy shower, your ceiling needs some fresh air ventilating through the room to get rid of all the steam.  Make sure to consider easy access to a window or if this is not an option, install an extractor fan.

Steam is the biggest culprit for mouldy ceilings over time.  You can also use mould-preventative paint for your ceiling. 

Light

One of the most important items to consider is not the romantic side of the bathroom, but certainly fantastic lighting.

This is not always possible with most bathrooms having small windows.  There is a great solution for this problem and that is to install a skylight in your bathroom.  It will open the space immediately making it feel much bigger already. You will want to spend hours here, especially taking evening baths whilst staring at the stars!  Doesn’t that sound fabulous!  If this is not possible, you can easily install LED lights behind your floating shelves for additional light. 

Style

Whatever your style is, a small bathroom needs to be uncluttered, inviting and clean. The best practice is to find a little spot for every dot.
