Ceilings often don’t get a lot of thought put into them, but they can make or break the design of your home. In structure, colour, and texture, they add just as much artistic flair to your home as walls do, and should be carefully considered in the design process.

Type of Ceilings

With the types of ceiling options that lay before you, you can create a completely different ambiance and aesthetic with each. On the other hand, while a coffered ceiling has many recessed areas, a tray ceiling features a single raised area that shapes the room.

Tray ceilings are great for open-plan spaces where organisation between the different sections is needed, as well as for adding dimension. However, if you’re looking for something a little more rustic, beamed ceilings are an innovative way to bring nature in, and create interest in your home.

Texture and Colour

While these are all innovative design options, if you want to stick with “regular” ceilings, consider the importance of texture and colour. Your ceilings don’t have to be plain white, so play around with ideas! Consider adding panelling, wallpaper, repainting, or adding different ceiling materials such as polystyrene tiles for a more decorative ceiling.

However, remember that no amount of painting over can repair structural damage to your ceiling, so it is important to keep up with maintenance and get the right people in when there’s anything along the lines of sagging or water damage. A structurally insecure ceiling can be a great risk to you and your family, so make sure it is installed and maintained properly!

Corrnices

Cornices are what add extra flair and aesthetics to your ceiling space. As they fit around the edge of your ceiling, you’ll want something that fits your ceiling and home in design and colour. Ceiling cornices come in many different materials, ranging from plaster, gypsum, polyurethane, MDF, and timber.

They each come with their sets of advantages and disadvantages, in terms of weight, durability, ease of installation and price, but very commonly used is polystyrene cornices. They are often used for their thermal insulating abilities, as well as their great durability and resistance to humidity and water damage – therefore working perfectly in bathrooms and kitchens.
