Catios are a clever way of ensuring that your indoor cat (or even dog!) gets to experience the outdoors in a safe and supervised environment. 

What Is A Catio? 

A catio is a structure of any size that is built with the purpose of allowing your pet out of the house, while still being kept safe and without the option of roaming. 

Do Indoor Cats Need Catios? 

Indoor cats do not necessarily need a catio, as long as you provide sufficient stimulation, toys and other enrichment opportunities for them inside, but for those who have plenty of outdoor space, a catio is something you could consider. 

Are There Rules To Building A DIY Catio? 

Your catio can be any size, shape or layout that you choose. It should provide sufficient protection from the elements, be structurally sound and should not be easy for your cat to escape from. Other than that, only your imagination can impede your plans. 

You will need planning permission for your catio if it exceeds a certain floor area or height. This depends on the building regulations in your area.
