Who is the responsible adult?

December 15, 2023by HOMEMAKERS Editor0 comments

When times changes, so should your home.

Festive season changes

If you have great memories of festive season as a kid, chances are at least one grown-up cared about you and worked really hard behind the scenes to give your holiday that added touch of jingle.

It’s a fact that, as we grow up, our family dynamics and the roles we play changes. From being the kid that was at the centre of the holiday planning and the recipient of the magic, to the grown-up doing the planning themselves, its just a normal progression whenever families, friends or loved ones come together.

The Host with the Most

However, an important part of changing family dynamics, is the necessary changes to the venue that hosts the get-together.

In a traditional sense, Christmas is often hosted by whoever is the “senior” family member. This can be parents, eldest siblings or even extended family that somehow fulfil the roll of seasonal hosts. (Maybe the uncle with the farm or the Auntie with the pool?)

Change is inevitable.

As traditional as any family festive fête is, life dictates that change is constant and you might very well find that you are suddenly the default host and now you need to upgrade your venue or at least move some things around to make space for the party.

There are a couple of aspects that a successful seasonal host venue needs:

What’s cooking?

Whether you do a traditional warm cooked Christmas lunch, a proudly South African braai or some kind of laid-back hybrid, you are still going to need a food preparation area.

If you are lucky enough to have newly renovated kitchen, a brand new indoor/outdoor braai and patio area and four extra refrigerators in the garage…Well, you are sorted. If, however, you are a normal homeowner who is still trying to find their feet and only has one refrigerator, we have you covered.

Ice, Ice Baby! (Don’t forget the salt.)

one of the easiest ways to clear up fridge space is to take out the drinks. Keeping all beverages, adult and kid friendly, in a separate space will leave room for the trifle, potato salad and cold cuts. Bags of ice are widely available, affordable and a great help if you are hosting in the summer. A large plastic or metal tub or container, a bag of salt and a couple of bags of ice are all you need. Adding salt to ice significantly lowers the temperature of the melted water and even if your ice inevitably melts, the water in the tub will stay below freezing, allowing your drinks to be frosty all day long. Trust us, its scientifically proven!

Make a picnic of it.

If seating is an issue and you have some outdoor space, why not enthuse your guests (even if only the kids fall for it at first) to take the party outside. Have a dedicated picnic zone and use anything from picnic blankets to bright beach towels, tablecloths, or decorative throws to create a bohemian vibe for all your able-bodied guests to lounge on. Arrange some camping chairs around the area for all the Ouma’s whose hips don’t like floor sitting and scatter your decorative pillows around. Before long your guests will get the memo, and be feasting and catching up Roman style!

Divide and conquer.

One of the easiest ways to cut down on the stress of holiday hosting is to be honest and laid back when it comes to the cooking and eating part. If you are only coming together for one meal/day, don’t feel guilty about delegating some of the duties to your guests. Making one salad, side dish or dessert offering at home and bringing it to the party really isn’t that difficult. Do some planning and adapt your menu to include things that can be made ahead of time.

One of our favourite hacks is to have a dessert harvest table instead of a single dessert dish. This way, everyone can bring the one special treat that they know their family loves and share it with the rest. Whether it’s a bag of Woollies Chuckles in a bowl, Mother’s best trifle, or home-made gingerbread cookies, it all adds to the festive magic.

Change is inevitable, even though it’s often tinged with sadness. Try to make the most of family dynamics this festive season and remember:

It’s not about getting, it’s about the giving.
It’s not about chewing, it’s about the chatting.
Less fights, more family.
