We had such great feedback from our article on official Lego sets builds we thought it a great idea to delve a little deeper into the Lego culture and explore the world of freestyle Lego art.

Nathan Sawaya, Ekow Nimako and Mariann Asanuma are three of the most celebrated Lego artists of our time and each of them bring their own personal journey to life, one brick at a time.

Nathan Sawaya

Arguably the most famous Lego Artist, Nathan Sawaya has gained international recognition with his Lego creations. An artist in the true sense of the word, his traveling exhibition, “Art of the Brick” is one of the must see art exhibits of the modern age. Symbolism in his work often centres around creative freedom, as he himself used Lego as a form of escapism when he was working as a corporate lawyer. He now creates Lego art permanently and we hope he has achieved the freedom he so eloquently portrays in his work.

Ekow Nimako

Ekow Nimako, born to Ghanaian parents and growing up in Canada, never saw much representations of black culture and history as he was growing up. He decided to address that, and consequently creates the most wonderful Lego art, inspired by black civilizations and lived experiences. To this end, his work stands out because he only uses pure black Lego blocks, and does not shy away from tackling difficult subjects through his art.

Mariann Asanuma

As one of the first female builders to smash into the Lego Art world, Mariann has not only made her mark but also hopes to share the magic of freelance building with other budding artists. She has authored two books which celebrate freestyle building and share some of her own handy secrets about model building. As a master builder at LEGOLAND in California, she is responsible for some of the parks most loved attractions.
