The All Purpose DIY Cleaning Solution You Need To Use

When Life Gets Expensive, We Make A Plan!
Has the cost of living got you going: “Hey wena, sjoe, no man!” every time you swipe your card?
We’ve done some research into cleaning hacks and homemade cleaning supplies that might just actually work…Call it frugal living or just plain “tricks our grannies taught us”, but there is sense in revisiting these old ways of doing things.
We’ve found (and tested!) a recipe for a staple of your everyday cleaning routine that will save your overstretched rands and be better for the environment in the long run.
The easiest way to get into DIY cleaning supplies is to make a basic all-purpose cleaning spray. You really don’t have to pay R50.00 per bottle for a basic surface cleaning spray each month.
Use this in your whole house.
DIY Cleaning Ingredients:
- 400ml boiled water (allow to cool)
- 200ml white vinegar
- 1 Teaspoon/small squirt of liquid dishwashing soap
- 1 Tablespoon baking soda
Optional Ingredients:
- substitute the dishwashing liquid with two sliced lemons to your DIY cleaner to lend grease-cutting power; or
- 10 drops of essential oil of your choice, to add a fresh fragrance to your cleaned house
You can even mix fragrances. Lavender and Mint go well together as do Eucalyptus and Lemon.

DIY Cleaner Benefits:
- By using a good quality re-usable spray bottle, you will cut down on your plastic consumption.
- You probably already have everything you need for this mix in your house. So basically, it’s free.
- Even if you have to buy some of the ingredients it will still cost a lot less than a monthly supply of store-bought cleaner and you can easily whip up a new batch once your supply gets low.
- This DIY cleaner is much less abrasive than store-bought options and in the long run, your surfaces will thank you.
Be Careful What You DIY.
Something like laundry detergent is best left to the professionals. If you get the mix wrong, not only can it ruin your clothes but in the long run, it can be harmful to the fittings and filters of your washing machine.
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
Other things are easier to re-purpose. Old dishwashing sponges and old toothbrushes can easily be given a new lease on life in your cleaning arsenal. Simply stick them in some Milton’s Sterilizing Solution, and then use them for detailed cleaning around the bathroom or kitchen.
The same goes for old towels, old sheets, and old clothing like men’s shirts and cotton t-shirts or socks.
These can all be easily repurposed into cleaning cloths and dusters, reducing your waste footprint, and saving you money along the way.
