We sat down with Yssel van Aswegen, founder of Waterproofing Squad and spoke about one of his most successful companies yet.  

What is Waterproofing Squad? How did you get started and what do you do? 

“Waterproofing Squad is a specialist company that provides high-quality waterproofing solutions for both residential and commercial properties. We work on roofs, balconies, parapet walls, basements, retaining walls, fishponds and any area that requires long-term protection from water damage.” 

Active for more than a decade, Waterproofing Squad was founded in 2012 by Yssel, and is managed by Brad Cullumbine, who brings over 25 years of industry experience. The company was built on the need for reliable, long-lasting waterproofing work backed by solid workmanship and honest service. 

“We offer a range of systems, including torch-on, rubberised coatings, liquid membranes, and damp-proofing, all installed by trained staff and tailored to suit the specific needs of each project.” 

Who is the team behind the company? How many employees do you have and where are you situated? 

“Waterproofing Squad is proudly owned by Yssel van Aswegen and managed by Brad Cullumbine, whose technical knowledge and hands-on approach ensure that each job is done right the first time. Brad oversees every project from inspection to final sign-off.” 

Based in Randburg and providing services throughout the greater Johannesburg region, they operate with a dedicated team of approximately 7 trained staff.  

“We are all experienced in waterproofing systems, surface preparation, and safety protocols and each member is committed to delivering neat, professional, and effective work.” 

Although they work mainly in Johannesburg, they are also available for  larger projects in surrounding areas as needed.  

They love a challenge and enjoy unique work and fault finding.  

“At Waterproofing Squad, we’re passionate about solving problems others couldn’t. Nothing excites us more than finding the source of a persistent leak, repairing it properly, and giving the client complete peace of mind.” 

They especially enjoy:

Fixing issues caused by other, substandard contractors doesn’t phase them. They see it as an exciting challenge.  

“One of our biggest challenges to date was a normal residential house roof project with multiple problem areas, poor drainage, and previous failed repairs from other contractors.” 

For this job they had to approach it methodically:  

• The job required: 

• Careful investigation, stripping old systems 

• Rebuilding certain damaged layers 

• And applying a comprehensive, multi-step waterproofing system over a tight schedule 

“We had to plan around bad weather, a challenging client, and returning to site more than once. It tested our patience and precision — but we successfully completed it, and the client has remained leak-free since.”

• Waterproofing isn’t just paint or a quick sealant — it requires proper preparation, layering, and curing. 

• Leaking isn’t always where it appears — water travels, and detecting the real source takes experience. 

• Cheaper quotes often skip important steps — like priming, detailing, or reinforcement layers. 

• Maintenance matters — waterproofed areas need occasional checks, especially flat roofs and high-moisture zones.
