Hurkle-durkle in your happy place!
Make your bedroom your me-zone.
Don’t get up just yet.
There is a difference between hitting snooze and turning over for that second nap, and waking up on time, but not getting up. There is a word for this…it’s called “Hurkle-Durkle” and its lovely.
Although most human beings can see the magic in this, the word originated in Scotland, and it basically means lounging around in bed beyond the time you are supposed to get up.
Now, as comfort creatures, this resonates with us, and we love the thought of enjoying a bit more me-time in our bedroom sanctuaries before braving the day (particularly with winter around the corner).
Don’t overdo it.
We don’t suggest you spend each morning in a Hurkle-y Durkle-y stupor of unproductive hibernation, but there is value in practicing this form of selfcare in moderation.
In order to Hurkle Durkle successfully you need the time and the space.
Time:
That’s up to you – whether it’s a weekend institution, or the way you start that one weekday when you have a bit of breathing space, Hurkle your Durkle when you can fit it in.
Space:
This is where we deviate form the definition a bit. As comfortable as we know your bed is, with your brand-new headboard and side-table setup, why not try a bedroom lounge spot? Whether it’s a full-blown pyjama lounge in an adjoining room, or simply a section of your bedroom that you transform into a cosy seating spot, is dictated by your available space and budget.
We personally love a good pyjama lounge, but that’s not an achievable goal for most of us.
On the other hand, revamping a small corner of your bedroom can give you big comfort in exchange for a bit of effort. Let’s call this space your “me-zone”. (Because talking about your “Durkledom” will leave strangers confused and loved ones concerned.)
So, what is needed for a me-zone?
Seating.
If you don’t have the space for a full couch or chaise lounge, a simple wingback or even beanbag with a bit of extra room to tuck up your feet is more than sufficient for a bit of Hurkling. A well-balanced seating arrangement can benefit any bedroom and if you pick the right furniture and décor for this zone it will enhance the look and feel of your space immensely. For inspiration we love these stunning bedroom seating ideas, as well as these sitting spaces.
Comfort.
This is seasonal. In summer you might not need anything, or even want some form of refreshing cooling like a fan or air conditioning unit, but in winter, nothing beats a pile of comfy cushions and stacks of blankets. Play around with textures and fabric and think about what will give you the comfort you need to get out of bed. we love the current trend of faux fur throws and full-sized blankets that add a regal, luxurious touch to any space. This beautiful grey brown faux deer fur blanket from @home whispers elegance and wraps around you like a warm hug.
Sustenance.
In an ideal world you’ll be woken up a steaming cup of your favourite hot drink, but in the real world you’ll have to fend for yourself. To keep the morning lazy, consider setting up a drink station in your bedroom to avoid the buzz harshening trek to the kitchen. This can be as basic as a kettle and a mug, or as extravagant as a whole barista worthy hot bar with Italian coffee machines and six different types of milk…only your space and budget will influence this.
For coffee station inspiration we love these coffee bar ideas
Whether you get to Hurkle Durkle often or simply want to upgrade your bedroom vibes, the idea of a dedicated sitting-room within the sanctuary of your bedroom isn’t new. For many ages, the idea of sleeping quarters with different spaces for dressing and relaxing have been the epitome of luxury, but in our busy cramped lives we seem to have forgotten this. Let’s re-claim the bedroom as a me-zone and start giving ourselves more time for comfort and recharging.
